IELTS Speaking Lesson – 40 Minutes

This lesson can be used for any IELTS speaking class, including large classes, to practice IELTS questions part 1, improve fluency, and provide feedback.

Use the PowerPoint below to project the questions on the board.

Lesson Plan to Improve IELTS Part 1 Fluency

1. Tell students that you are going to practice IELTS speaking part 1. Tell them that right now they are only to focus on fluency and speaking for about 1 minute per question. Remind them to avoid pausing, hesitation, and too much self-correction (occasional self-correction is okay at this stage.) To get better at fluency, you need practice!

2. Write this on the board, and tell students that to avoid hesitation, they can use these fillers.

3. Put students into partners. Tell them that one will be the interviewer and one the interviewee. Then project these questions on the board.

4. Set a 5 minute timer and tell students to begin the interview.

5. When the 5 minutes is over, ask them how they felt. Did they speak too fast? Too slow? Too much? Too little? Did they hesitate a lot or do too much self-correction?

6. Now tell students to switch roles. Whoever asked questions last time, will now be answering questions and vice versa.

7. Project these questions onto the board.

8. Set the 5 minute timer, and when time is up, again ask students to discuss with their partners how they felt.

9. Now switch partners. Have one of the partners remain in their seats, and the other stand up and go to the person behind them. When everyone has switched, tell them to choose an interviewer/interviewee. Then project the next questions onto the board and set the 5 minute timer.

10. You can repeat these steps several more times with the following questions. As students are answering questions, the teacher can go around the room, taking notes and quietly offering feedback.

More Part 1 Questions

11. When all the questions are finished, give feedback. The teacher can write notes of mistakes on the board and everyone can correct them together. If students have questions, the teacher can answer them. The teacher can also give more tips about not speaking too fast, etc.

12. If you still have time, you can ask if any of the students want to practice in front of the class, and one or two students can come up and answer questions in front of everybody for extra practice under pressure.

Hopefully this lesson can improve your students fluency in part 1 and help them avoid hesitation and too much self-correction. You can repeat this lesson as many times as your students need.
