Young Learners Conversations – Asking Questions – 40 minutes
This easy conversation class is fun for young learners and gives them lots of practice asking and answering questions.
You will need one big dice and a lot of little dice for this lesson plan.
Before Class: Prepare 6 Questions
Remember to bring one big dice and a lot of little dice to class.
Before class choose 6 questions that your students are familiar with and decide on a simple image to represent each question.
For example, “Do you have a pet?” could be represented by a simple cat drawing. “How are you?” could be a smiley face and frowny face. “What food do you like?” could be a picture of an apple. “What can you do?” could be a stick figure swimming. “What color do you like?” could be a red and blue scribble. “What’s your favorite toy?” could be a teddy bear.
Step 1: Whole-class practice (10 minutes)
When you get to class, write 1-6 on the board and draw your simple drawings next to each. Now teach the students what each question represents. Practice saying and remembering the questions. You can try chanting the questions first. Then you can call on individuals to say the questions. Try covering the board and see if students can remember the questions without the pictures. Do whatever you can do to make it fun!
Step 2: Big dice practice (5 minutes)
Now take out a big dice and practice letting students come up, roll the dice, and ask you the question corresponding to the number they rolled. Answer their questions. Repeat with a few students.
Step 3: Model partner practice (5 minutes)
Depending on how many dice you have, that’s how many small groups you’ll have. Ideally the groups will be quite small, 2-4 students. Call up a group to model the activity for the class. If you’re going to be doing the activity with partners, call up two students. If it’ll be groups of four, call four students up. When the children are in front of their peers, give one student a dice, let her roll, and then she can ask her small group the question she landed on. When her teammates have answered her, she can pass the dice to the next person in her group. Let everyone in the group have a roll and ask a question.
Step 4: Conversation time! (10-20 minutes)
Now divide everyone into their small groups, pass out dice, and let them ask and answer questions. The teacher should walk around and correct mistakes and monitor as students practice. If you want to extend the activity, let students switch partners at least once.
Step 5: Feedback (5-10 minutes)
For feedback, have children tell you some things they learned about their friends. Be sure to correct any common mistakes you heard.
