5 Article Worksheets for A / An / The with Answers

Using the articles a / an / the (and no article) can be really tricky for students, so here are 5 fun worksheets you can print for your class to practice using articles. It can be hard to find interesting worksheets about article grammar, so we hope these enjoyable activities fit the bill!

Worksheet 1

In this worksheet, students categorize words in a word bank based on whether they use a / an / the / no article. Then students use the lists they’ve created to help them correct the article mistakes in a short story.

Worksheet 2

In this fun activity, students must first complete a word ladder puzzle before deciding which articles go with the words. To complete a word ladder puzzle, students must change one letter at a time, creating a new word for each rung of the ladder, and eventually connecting the top of the ladder to the bottom.

If you aren’t sure how to complete a word ladder, you can check the answer sheet first. You can also give your students hints in class if necessary. (For example, “Number 7 is a famous river.”)

After completing the word ladder, students use the words and articles to complete the sentences below.

Worksheet 3

Article worksheet number 3 is a classic crossword puzzle with a twist. Students must include the correct article (a / an / the / no article) with their answer. For example, if the answer is the United States of America. Students would need to write THEUNITEDSTATESOFAMERICA.

The questions are all related to traveling around the world.

Worksheet 4

For this worksheet, students read a short news article about a young man riding trains across Germany and fill in the gaps with the correct articles (a / an / the). Then they explain why they chose the articles they did. Finally they answer a few comprehension and discussion questions about the article.

Worksheet 5

This worksheet lets students get creative. First they look at the images, guess the word, and write the correct article beside it. Then they use the words and articles from page 1 to write their own story on page 2. If you want, students can read their stories out loud in class when they’ve finished. The teacher should be sure to check students’ stories for correct use of the articles.

I hope those 5 worksheets make teaching articles a little bit easier and give your students plenty of practice using a / an / the.
